The greatest song you never heard : MOTHER LOVE BONE

Andrew Wood was a legend. I never thought so but his peers did. Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Kevin Martin, Stone Gossard, Mike McCreedy. Andrew Wood never got see the release of his album on a major label. He never knew success. He wasted his life away on heroin. When he left, his peers mourned. His band members and friends wrote songs about him and formed bands to honor him. Temple of The Dog was a band formed to pay tribute to Would. Their song Say Hello To Heaven along with Candlebox's Far Behind and the Alice In Chains classic WOULD? were all written about him. When Pearl Jam closed the Philly Spectrum for good, they made sure Wood be be remembered that night and cemented him in yet another piece of history. The video is Pearl Jam doing the Mother Love Bone (WOOD'S BAND)classic CROWN OF THORNS. RIP ANDREW

Below is a story about Courtney Love. Somehow a person who looks like she can give an entire room aids by sneezing on them was able to crash an AIDS benefit to ask Elton John to play on her next album.......................SIGH

Courtney Love is hatching a plan when she stops by the Elton John AIDS Foundation annual benefit, An Enduring Vision, held Monday at NYC’s Cipriani Wall Street.

“I hope he plays on my record tomorrow,” the friendly, open musician/actress, 45, says. “I’m working him. I have no idea if he’s gonna do it, but he said he might.”

The Hole rocker and widow of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain attributes the groundedness of 17-year-old daughter Frances Bean to “DNA.”

Courtney says, “She’s really conservative in a good way. She’s going to college. She’s looking at colleges. She’s in her last year of school. She wants to go to an Ivy League school [where she’ll study] fine art, maybe film.”

What are her thoughts on plastic surgery?

“Well, my schnoz is back, but I wouldn’t do anything else again,” she says.

Any regrets about tattoos?

“A really drunk night [inspired one], and I’m going to need to get it fixed,” she says. “I had it faded, but I want something there that means something other than a bad, drunk night in New Orleans. It’s an angel. I got it in the nineties.”

The intro to this song reminds me of Nutshell and the song has a real JAR OF FLIES sounding quality to it

ALICE IN CHAINS VIDEO TEASER

It's only 30 seconds worth, but the video seems a little corny. You know what? IT DOESNT FUCKING MATTER IF IT'S CORNY. IT'S NEW ALICE IN CHAINS MOFO'S. Seriously, the new single Your Decision has a real JAR OF FLIES flavor to it and although it's just an EP, it's still my favorite AIC effort to date, so YOur Decsision is right up there for me

Remember the Beach House back in the 90's when decent music still ruled the earth?

It features a mixture of both established and new musical artists, from solo performers to bands and larger ensembles.

As previously reported, "Project Runway" season three model Amanda Fields is featured in the new video from ALICE IN CHAINS, "Your Decision", which was recently filmed in a "giant house between Santa Monica and Malibu off the Pacific Coast Highway." The clip is being directed by Stephen Schuster, who previously worked with ALICE IN CHAINS on the "A Looking In View" video.

To coincide with the band's European tour, ALICE IN CHAINS will release the "Your Decision" single on November 16 in the U.K.

"Your Decision" is the second single to be lifted from band's first all-new album in 14 years, titled "Black Gives Way To Blue", which sold 126,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 5 on The Billboard 200 chart (behind latest albums from PARAMORE, MARIAH CAREY, BARBRA STREISAND and BREAKING BENJAMIN).

ADDICTION AND WITHDRAWEL

Ten Best Baseball Movies

# Poster Movie
10 Major League (1989)

You'll find just as many people who hate this movie as love it, but just about everyone who has seen it remembers it, which puts it ahead of most movies. While the story is cliché, the gags predictable and the characters two-dimensional, the movie is fun and the actors look like they can play.

9 The Sandlot (1993)

It's probably the least known of any of the movies on our list, but It's by far the most charming of all the baseball movies featuring kids that followed "The Bad News Bears." A cast of unknowns, except for James Earl Jones, creates a fond remembrance of what it was like to play neighborhood ball together.

8 A League of Their Own (1992)

The movie is more about women fighting for their rights than the game on the field, but the women are credible as baseball players, except maybe Lori Petty. The movie also brought attention to a forgotten piece of baseball history, and it gets extra credit for adding the line "There's no crying in baseball" to the vernacular.

7 The Natural (1984)

Another movie that tends to divide peoples opinions, It's a sentimental view of a slugger and the game. It's based on a novel by Bernard Malamud and features a strong cast led by Robert Redford. Baseball romantics love it and see it as a fable, while more jaded fans say It's overrated and simplistic. Either way, It's a lovely and influential movie.

6 The Bad News Bears (1976)

The best pure baseball comedy, this movie reminded everyone what Little League was really like. Walter Matthau and Tatum O'Neal were perfect in their roles, and all of the foul-mouthed kids fit together beautifully. Don't hold it against this movie that it spawned many more unfunny movies that tried to be like it, including "The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training" and "The Bad News Bears Go to Japan," which somehow starred Tony Curtis.

5 The Pride of the Yankees (1942)

This classic is about baseball the way "Steel Magnolias" was about hairdressers. Much is made about Gary Cooper (as Gehrig) not really being lefthanded, but in this movie it hardly matters. Viewed today, It's a hopelessly sentimental movie, but it was made in a different age and is the best of the baseball melodramas. And at the end, when Cooper gives the "luckiest man on the face of the earth" speech, You'll shed a tear in spite of yourself. Bonus points for appearances by actual Yankees, including Babe Ruth and Bill Dickey.

4 Eight Men Out (1988)

A thoroughly modern look back at a simpler time, this movie does not romanticize baseball's history and captures the time of the Black Sox scandal in an authentic way. John Sayles wrote and directed the movie, based on a book by Eliot Asinof, and does a great job of bringing the complexity of the story to the screen. A great cast helps as well. About the only thing the movie lacks is emotional intensity.

3 Bang the Drum Slowly (1973)

This is the baseball version of "Brian's Song," only better. It started a period of great modern baseball movies and is still regarded by many as the best of the bunch. The movie helped launch the careers of Michael Moriarty as the star pitcher and Robert DeNiro as the dying catcher. Some prefer the Mark Harris novel (he also wrote the screenplay) or criticize the details of the baseball in the movie, but that is quibbling. It's a truly touching film.

2 Field of Dreams (1989)

Only the truly cynical aren't taken by this movie, which captures better than any other the mystical hold that baseball can have over people. Kevin Costner and the rest of the cast are great in this adaptation of W.P. Kinsella's novel "Shoeless Joe." It seems that everyone latches on to something different as their favorite part or as the message of the film. Like baseball itself, It's a simple movie that also proves beautifully complex.

1 Bull Durham (1988)

And It's not even that close. First, "Bull Durham" is far and away the most authentic portrayal of the game, both on and off the field. Baseball is treated with casual reverence: It's a great game, and we love it, but it is a game. Costner is at his best, and Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon are perfect complements. The romance between Costner and Sarandon is also just right. It's all thanks to writer and director Ron Shelton, who spent five years in the minor leagues and cared about doing things right. He avoids the usual sports movie clichés - he filmed Costner catching a foul pop just because he said movies never show the routine plays and creates characters that we like and a world that we Don't want to leave.

WTF Happened To Krist Noveselic?

He aged like 50 years and now has a column in a fancy Seattle paper?

KRIST NOVOSELIC DISCUSSES RECENT ELECTION
11 November 2009 No Comment

Credit: SeattleWeekly.com

Young voters managed to shake things up again this year–most notably in Seattle’s mayoral race. The new generation may have taken the torch to the status quo, but it’s only natural for change to come–sooner or later. After two successful landmark elections, young voters should remember that they’re not always going to be pulling wins, and that a once-unthinkable goal can become reality with hard work and perseverance. Voters upholding Washington’s new domestic-partnership law is proof of that. Here’s my take on last week’s election and an ever-transforming political culture.

Seattle Music

Last September, Seattle’s music establishment came out in support of the individual campaigns of Dow Constantine, Mike McGinn, and Peter Holmes. It’s a sweep of wins. Having a politically active music/entertainment community goes back many years, and has produced officials like bandleader Vic Meyers, who served at different times as Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State.

The Crocodile hosted various events during election season that not only raised thousands of dollars, but also got good coverage and brought glam to campaigns. These kinds of events will now be a must-do for candidates seeking office locally and beyond.

State Measures: 1-1033, R-71

Even though I-1033 lost, Tim Eyman has said he’ll be back with another proposal next year. The man is practically another branch of government. The tax-limiting proposal’s loss shows that many voters value government services. We’ll see how the legislature and a Constantine-led King County will interpret this regarding raising taxes. My hunch is that they will propose higher taxes mainly through ballot measures.

In 1997 I had a bumper sticker on my car that said Hands Off Washington. The term referred to a group that was promoting I-677, a ballot measure that dealt with civil rights regarding employing gays and lesbians. I-677 lost badly at the polls. But a week after that election, it would have been unimaginable for Olympia ever to pass a same-sex domestic-partnership law, let alone for voters to approve it. Last Tuesday, voters gave the thumbs-up to R-71, granting rights to state-registered same-sex domestic partnerships. It goes to show how the public’s mores change over time.

Ranked Choice Voting

We election reformers in Washington got our asses handed to us on a platter on election night. Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) was overwhelmingly rejected by voters in Pierce County.

RCV seemed to work well in its 2008 debut–especially considering the large turnout for the presidential campaign. Voters knew how to rank candidates, but I’ve found that many didn’t know why they were doing it.

RCV was passed by voters in 2006 and 2007 as an alternative to partisan primary ballots. But in 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a version of Washington’s long-standing top-two primary. Voters already had a majority voting system they were used to. The newfangled RCV ballots must have appeared unnecessary.

RCV folds the primary into the general election, therefore saving the cost of holding two separate elections. But Washington still had a primary for other elections, and the savings were not realized. In addition, election administrators paid exorbitant fees to the private company that contracts with the county for including RCV within the tabulating infrastructure. RCV was hit for being too expensive.

To many, depending on whom you wanted to see elected, RCV somehow produced the wrong results. The political establishment strongly opposed the system, and again administrators did it no favors. Many beat up on RCV because they claimed it took too long to count the ballots. While most RCV races were called on election night, it was a week before voters found out who won the county executive race.

Even my own Democratic party was against it. Unlike the top-two, RCV allows political parties to control who uses their name on the ballot. Ironically, this only worked against RCV because of the widespread impression of party rank-and-file as hacks and bosses.

But not all was bad. There was an RCV election itself in Pierce and it worked well. Minneapolis had its first RCV election last week. Even though it too was pushing against bureaucratic headwinds, it worked fine to many good reviews.

I first started promoting election reform in 1997 and this issue has come a long way. Regardless of the results of an election, you have to accept what happened and keep participating. That’s the deal with democracy, you win some, you lose some.

New Slash Album Will Kick Ass

I'm a little pissed off about the Fergie song. That pants wetting slob shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a classic like Paradise City. Cypress Hill can do whatever they went, just so they don't put a cap in my ass but FERGIE? I'll let it go though because Slah's solo album has everybody and their mother playing on it. M Shadows, Dave Grohl, Lemmy, Alice Cooper, and the first single, which will be released in Janurary and feature OZZY FUCKING OSBOURNE. This would be the second Ozzy and Slash collaberion. The first was called I Aint No Nice Guy which I'll post below. This one is from the early 90's

Slash has just released a two-track CD single in Japan containing the song "Sahara" (featuring singer Koshi Inaba of the Japanese hard rock duo B'Z) and a version of the GN'R classic "Paradise City" (featuring CYPRESS HILL and Fergie [a.k.a. Stacy Ann Ferguson] of the BLACK EYED PEAS).

Slash recently told MusicRadar.com that he got almost every special guest he wanted to appear on his upcoming solo album, except for one: WHITE STRIPES singer/guitarist and DEAD WEATHER drummer Jack White. Slash revealed, "I wanted to get Jack White to sing on something, but he didn't want to sing. He said I'll play drums, I'll play guitar, but I don't wanna sing. He was one guy that I wanted to work with. Pretty much everyone else that I went after I managed to get."

"Slash" will see Roadrunner Records enter into a unique and innovative association with a U.K. media partner — the special-interest media group Future. In a brand new concept in record distribution the standard album release will be preceded by a "fan pack," in which the Roadrunner Records album will be bundled together with a highly collectable special issue of Future Publishing's Classic Rock magazine dedicated to Slash's career. This will be the first format of the album available anywhere in the world.

Slash tracked most of the CD with former NINE INCH NAILS drummer Josh Freese and ex-JANE'S ADDICTION bassist Chris Chaney.

The birth of Metal

Led Zepplin is not fucking Heavy Metal. Led Zepplin sang Ritchie Valens Songs. They are a great band. They are legends. They are not heavy metal. Robert Plant is not the greatest Heavy Metal vocalist of all time. This is why these lists are useless. Black Sabbath. That's heavy metal. Can you trace metal's roots back further? Perhaps, but I don't care. The opening, ominous riff of Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath is how anyone with a pulse will remember heavy metal being born. Led Zepplin is a cool rock band. Metal started with Black Sabbath. Metal is evil. Metal is reaching for more. Metal is is culture. Have you been to Led Zepplin fest? These bands grew from the sounds of Black Sabbath and the greatest Heavy Metal vocalist of all time is it's first, Ozzy Fucking Osbourne. These lists are superfluous. Freddy Mercury number 6 heavy metal vocalist OF ALL TIME. Queen is awesome but metal? Jajon Witherspoon from Sevendust over SEBASTIEN BACH? Did Hit Parader pull these names out of a hat?

STP MTV MOVIE AWARDS 93

Scott Weiland is a junkie F%$Kup. He's our junkie F*$Kup though. STP is one of the most explosive live bands in the country and it's hard to say just how much further along STP would be if Scott Weiland was clean. Maybe the music would suck altogether. We don't know. We only know that as is, Stone Temple Pilots will be go down as one of the greatest bands of our time, maybe all time

NIRVANA LIVE AT READING

\

With Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and Creed all releasing new albums, why shouldn't Nirvana get in on the action. Here's a pretty in depth review of this legendary concert FINALLY getting an official release

Nirvana - Live at Reading DVD/CD

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
It's probably a good thing that this legendary, highly sought-after concert film has been kept under wraps for seventeen years. It's now been long enough that the viewer can simply enjoy the performance for what it is without having all the thoughts of Kurt Cobain's tragic demise running through their head.

Widely bootlegged and constantly raved about by those who were in attendance, this is the first official release of this entire concert from England's Reading Festival in 1992 (only two of the songs/video clips have been released before.) So this is like Christmas time for fans of the ground-breaking trio and Santa Kurt and company bring a sleigh overflowing with rocking presents.

The show begins with a bit of tongue-in-cheek tomfoolery as Cobain is pushed on stage in a wheelchair wearing a hospital gown and a long blond wig. He wobbles to the microphone and jokingly sings the first line of Bette Midler's "The Rose" before falling over on his back and lying prostrate for a moment. The lights go out and under the cover of darkness Cobain grabs his guitar and rips into the opening chords of "Breed."

From there on out it's a non-stop display of power as the boys perform almost all of Nevermind along with little gems like "Tourette's" which is the first-ever live performance of that song. Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic are all clearly having a ball this night; Novoselic tells jokes and jives around, Cobain often sports a rare ear-to-ear grin and goofs around musically by doing things like intro-ing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with the opening riff from Boston's "More Than a Feeling."

There's one spot in the show where emotions threaten to take over but the moment turns out nicely instead. Cobain addresses the crowd about how he and wife Courtney Love had been getting a lot of bad press at the time and how Love felt like everyone hated her. So in all seriousness Cobain asks the crowd to shout, on the count of three, "We love you Courtney!" They do and Cobain is visibly moved before not-so-coincidentally launching into "All Apologies."

Nirvana's loosey-goosey attitude on this evening may have had something to do with how hot they play; the show is riveting from beginning to end based on sheer musicianship and not stage antics.

The show ends with the band playing tribute to Fang and the Wipers with covers of "The Money Will Roll Right In" and "D-7" respectively and then a version of "Territorial Pissings" that devolves into a (carefully orchestrated) stage destruction and a Cobain rendering of "The Star Spangled Banner" a la Jimi Hendrix. It was an interesting choice of songs to close out a show in England---many in the crowd may not have recognized the tune or the nod to Hendrix---but they didn't much care. They had just witnessed one of the best rock concerts ever, period. This DVD and its CD counterpart can be purchased separately or bundled together.

MISSING METALLICA FAN HELP

I really hate this. It doesn't look good for Morgan and it really pisses me off. This 20 year old girl just wanted to take THREE hours to get away from her everyday stress and just rock out with some live Metallica, and she goes missing. That's sick. I feel for this poor girl and her parents. I can't even pretend to know their pain. Maybe by some miracle, Morgan will come home. Her story continues below

Rex Bowman of The Roanoke Times reports that organizers of a three-day search for Morgan Dana Harrington — the missing 20-year-old junior from Virginia Tech who was last seen at METALLICA's October 17, 2009 concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia — said Thursday night they anticipate up to 1,000 volunteers could show up today for the kickoff of the effort. But despite the expected turnout, they are continuing to urge residents around the state to converge on Charlottesville to take part in the search for any trace of the Roanoke County woman.

Thursday night, more than 300 volunteers arrived at Charlottesville's Cavalier Inn, not far from where the 20-year-old was last seen October 17, to attend a meeting at which organizers briefed them on the logistics of the massive search. Organizers hope to have teams of volunteers out in the neighborhoods, back streets and wooded areas of Charlottesville from 9 a.m. until dark today, Saturday and Sunday.

A Rise From The Dead

Sorry it's been a few days. No Excuses, lets get to the news.

MÖTLEY CRÜE/SIXX A.M. bassist Nikki Sixx has issued the following update:

"Home has recharged the batteries and seamless creativity is flowing again.....

"I always love it when a friend turns me onto a book, music or something I haven’t heard about or seen before. There's some cool stuff out and about and I thought you might like it too.

"I took Katherine [Nikki's girlfriend, tattoo artist and 'L.A. Ink' star Kat Von D] to see 'Nevermore - An Evening With Edgar Allen Poe' at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. Jeffrey Combs delivers the arrow to the heart in this one-man play. This is a must-see. We loveeeeed it.

"As a teenager,I feel in love with Hieronymus Bosch. Recently his work has re-struck a chord in me and I am admittedly on the verge of being obsessed.

"If you're a fan of 1400s -1500s European painters, you owe it to yourself to Google his work.

"Audio books have taken over my life recently. In this fast-paced world we live in, multi tasking is taking over our lives. I do it sometimes, and hate that I get caught up in it. Trying to boil down to simple things like just writing a song, not answering emails while having lunch with a friend or talking on the phone during a long ride somewhere with your girlfriend seems like more work than it should. One way to block out the noise in your life is to listen to audio books on the ride (plains, trains and automobiles). Unless your with someone, of course...hahahah....

"Three audio books I would like to recommend are:

* 'Tuesday With Morrie' by Mitch Albom (an oldie but goodie)
* 'A New Earth' by Eckhart Tolle
* 'The Mirror Effect' by Dr Drew

"On a personal, front my photography is challenging me to go to new heights. I sometimes wonder if I'll ever get to the level I am striving for. It can be so frustrating and challenging, as I said before, maybe I should just give in a shoot 8 by 10.

"New SIXX: A.M. music is coming along nicely but no deadline or release dates to even consider. I will say it feels like the next logical step musically for the band. James [Michael, vocals] used the word 'important' in describing the new lyrics.

Everything is in full-on creative mode right now and that's when the magic really happens.

"That's really all for now.

"I hope you're all enjoying the change of season and look forward to some exciting news to share with you in the near future."

THE GOD AND THE KINGS

While Pearl Jam was making history over in Philadelphia while playing the final four concerts ever at the Spectrum, Metallica might have done the coolest thing ever in music history up in New York at Madison Square Garden. They jammed out with Lou Reed on Sweet Jane. Okay Cool. They brought out Ray Davies from the Kinks and played YOU REALLY GOT ME to show the world where that sound originated, but THEN, THEN, They brought out the King of all things dark, and metal in this universe. Metallica jammed with OZZY OSBOURNE on Paranoid and Iron Man. It sounded like a truck careening into a packed arena, and could be best be described as assault and battery on the ear drums. IT WAS AWESOME. There would be no Metallica without Black Sabbath. There would be no music we hear on JSE without Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath is where the sound of metal and the picture of what metal should be came together. It started with Sabbath. Metallica paid them the perfect tribute by tearing the roof off the Garden with Black Sabbath's lead singer, the last legendary rock star we have

What A F*CKING WEEKEND

So Friday night was Jse's big Halloween party. The guy that won best costume and 750 bucks was a guy dressed like Tom Hanks from Castaway complete with Wilson the volleyball. Who says the 90's are dead? Of all the costumes though, I believe our own afternoon jock Mark Thompson took the cake (Mark's a big guy, probably a few pieces of cake)by dressing up as an overweight Mr. T who desperately needs a tan. He had the overalls, the chains, and I pity the fool who feels otherwise. Now the next night, Pearl Jam closed the Philadelphia Spectrum and I just happened to be there. It was weird. I sat in the press box so everyone around me was "somebody" except me. I'm just a rock and roll kid from NY. There were some heavy hitting Philly D. J.'s around me. Now the show went 4 hours. I loved it, but the truth is I'd rather have been just one of the fans down on the floor rocking out. These other guys just sat there and watched the show. What fun is that? No sing alongs, no yelling and shouting requests, no energy. Maybe it's cool to be somebody, but it's a lot more fun just being one of the crowd

Pearl Jam DEVO

PEARL JAM One Last Time

Well there was probably no bigger piece of history being made last night than in the city of Philadelphia. On one side of Broad street was game three of the World Series, the first played between the Yankees and the Phillies in the city of Brotherly love in 59 years. On the other side, in between THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of polluted tailgaters was the final concert ever to be played in the Philadelphia Spectrum. With all of the rumors about who was going to show up last night from Bruce Springsteen to Elvis, and the rumors about how the band would play to three oclock in the morning, Pearl Jam had some HUGE expectations to meet. Noone showed up. The show ended around 1. Noone left unhappy. 41 songs, Four Hours. Something for everyone on the setlist. Pearl Jam coming out as DEVO and and playing WHIP IT? Priceless. Hearing Pilate and Crown of Thorns played live? Awesome. Bugs? Not so much but the crowd last night can say they were the ONLY ones to ever hear it live. Pearl Jam had to step up to the plate and they knocked it out of the park
